No. 11 BATTERY, 7 TH BRIGADE.

Lieut. Col. Tremlett’s battery served with the Field Force through the whole of the war a heavy share of arduous and important d uty falling to its lo t. The HQ were with Wood’s Column throughout its various operations,including the action at the Zunguin Nek on the 24th Jan.; the battle of Khambula, on the 19th March; and the battle of Ulundi, on the 4th July - a detachment being also present at the action on Hlobane on the 28th March,and two men of the battery at the battle of Gingindlovu on the 2nd April; while another division of the battery,under Lieut. Wilford Lloyd, served with Pearson ’s Column fro m the date of its formation till the relief of Eshowe - being present at the battle of Nyezane on the 22nd Jan., and throughout the subsequent blockade of the post; and afterwards taking part in the operations of Crealock’s Div. Major Russell, of the battery, was killed when in command of a rocket d etachment at Isandlwana on the 22nd Jan.


Bt. Lieut. Colonel. Tremlett, E.G. Commanded the R.A. of Wood’s Column throughout the war, including the action of the Zunguin Nek, and the battles of Hlobane, Khambula, and Ulundi. (Repeatedly mentioned in despatches; Brevet of Lieut. Col.)

Bt. Major. Browne, H.R.V. Proceeded to So uth Africa, vice Major Russell, killed; joined the battery with a draft at Khambula Camp, and took part in Wood’s advance on Ulundi. On the break-up of the Flying Column,returned with the b attery to Durban. (Mentioned in d espatch es; Brevet of Major.)

Captain. Bigge, A.J. Served in the battery with Wood’s Column. Was present at the action on the Zunguin Nek, the action on the Lower Hlobane, and the battle o f Khambula. (Mentioned in despatches.) Lieutenant. Slade, F.G. Served in the battery with Wood’s Column throughout. Was present at the action on the Zunguin Nek, that battle of Khambula (mentioned in despatches), and the battle of Ulundi. After the conclusion of the war accompanied H.I.M. the Empress Eugénie in her journey to Zululand. Lieutenant Lloyd, W.N. Served in the battery throughout the war. Was in command of the R.A. of Pearson’s Column, being present at the battle of Nyezane (mentio ned in despatches) and the occupatio n of Eshowe (mentioned in despatches). Served throughout the subsequent ad vance of Crealock’s Div. (mentioned in despatches).
